Kreuzberg remains rude

I think this famous sentence from the graffiti scene is symbolic of my attitude towards Berlin. Because Berlin doesn't want to please you and doesn't want to adapt to your needs. Because Berlin stays the way it wants to be and “Kreuzberg stays rude”.

When I defended my business plan before a committee, the panel asked me the following question: What does Berlin actually mean to you personally? I would like to try to give you my answer here as best as I can:

Berlin is my home. A place where I feel like I can help shape the city. I love that nothing is permanent and that the city is constantly reinventing itself. It always shows a new and different side. Berlin is never finished, never perfect and remains different from all other German cities.

The setting

My mother used to say something about Berlin that has stuck in my mind forever: "Tomorrow my new favorite cafe will open, I just don't know yet." I think this describes the attitude towards this city well. We don't know what will happen, but we know that we will definitely like it.

I like Berlin's direct nature, the natural use of first names, the rough tone, the provocations and sometimes the anonymity. These peculiarities certainly contribute to the influx from other German cities. I can often do whatever I want and don't stand out. Slippers and sweatpants are standard for morning shopping. For me, Berlin is like a giant gallery that you never get tired of. Although it often gets on my nerves and I don't like many of the changes and transformations at the beginning or at least view them critically: It remains an honest love with rough edges.
